What is Bluetooth

What is Bluetooth?

Bluetooth is a wireless technology standard for exchanging data between fixed and mobile devices over short distances using short-wavelength UHF radio waves in the industrial, scientific and medical radio bands, from 2.400 to 2.485 GHz, and building personal area networks (PANs). It was originally conceived as a wireless alternative to RS-232 data cables.

Bluetooth is managed by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), which has more than 30,000 member companies in the areas of telecommunication, computing, networking, and consumer electronics. The IEEE standardized Bluetooth as IEEE 802.15.1, but no longer maintains the standard. The Bluetooth SIG oversees the development of the specification, manages the qualification program, and protects the trademarks. A manufacturer must meet Bluetooth SIG standards to market it as a Bluetooth device. A network of patents applies to the technology, which is licensed to individual qualifying devices.

  • Frequency: 2.45 GHz
  • Developed by: Bluetooth Special Interest Group
  • Physical range: Typically less than 10 m (33 ft), up to 100 m (330 ft); Bluetooth 5.0: 40–400 m (100–1,000 ft)
  • Compatible hardware: Personal computers; Smartphones; Gaming consoles; Audio devices

Bluetooth is, with the infrared, one of the major wireless technologies developed to achieve WPAN.

Bluetooth is a wireless LAN technology used to connect devices of different functions such as telephones, computers (laptop or desktop), notebooks, cameras, printers and so on.

The Bluetooth project was started by SIG (Special Interest Group) formed by four companies IBM, Intel, Nokia and Toshiba for interconnecting computing and communicating devices using short-range, lower-power, inexpensive wireless radios.

The project was named Bluetooth after the name of Viking kingHarald Blaatand who unified Denmark and Norway in the 10th century.

Bluetooth is a standard for a short-distance wireless connection between electronic devices. Instead of sending data through a cable (like when your EarPods are connected to your phone), it sends data over radio waves.
