Switch Mode Power Supply (SMPS)

What is a SMPS in Computer

What is a Switch Mode Power Supply?

The term SMPS is defined as when the power supply is involved with the switching regulator to change the electrical power from one form to another form with required characteristics is called SMPS. This power supply is used to achieve a regulated DC output voltage from the DC input voltage (or) unregulated AC. SMPS is a complex circuit such as other power supplies, it provides the supply from a source to the loads. SMPS is very important for different appliances which consume power and also for making electronic projects.

Working Principle of an SMPS

A switching regulator does the regulation in the switch mode power supply. A series switching element switches the current supply to a smoothing capacitor turn ON and OFF. The voltage on the smoothing capacitor controls the time when the series element is switched. The constant switching of the capacitor keeps the voltage at the necessary level.

Applications of SMPS

The applications of SMPS include the following

  1. Security Systems
  2. Machine Tool Productions
  3. AV products
  4. Support supplies for PLCs

Atx is the newer version of AT/Baby AT. ATX motherboard uses a single keyed power connector in contrast to the dual connectors of AT and Baby AT boards. The keyed ATX power connector makes it nearly impossible to destroy a motherboard by connecting power supply incorrectly. In addition, ATX boards run on 3.3v eliminating the need of voltage regulator

AT and Baby AT connectors

This kind of connectors are used in a small system like laptop and small cabinets this was used before ATX come for home uses. Generally, they have a 5-pin DIN connector. AT and Baby AT motherboards used a pair of the power connector, which had to be attached to the case’s power supply via cables permanently attached to the power supply in such case M/B voltage is 5v. But today’s motherboard required 3.3v.so much m/B required voltage regulators which converts 5v to 3.3v these voltage regulators produced heat and depending upon the amount of current drawn by the CPU could overheat and cause unreliable operation.

CPU cooling FAN, system FAN has required a power supply to move fan .these have 3 pin connector inserted at motherboard at a particular place.

V-core Connector

In some m/B there is no provision for internally give voltage to CPU like new boards. They have this connector which is key locked to m/B and give required voltage to CPU
